March Meeting: Cynthia Blake Sanders on What Writers Need to Know about Contracts

The Baltimore Chapter, co-sponsored by the CityLit Project and the Write Here, Write Now workshops, presents Attorney Cynthia Blake Sanders to discuss the fine (and not-so-fine) points of contract law for writers. There's a lot of paperwork involved in getting published, and often writers are too eager to "sign on the bottom line" before really reading -- or fully understanding -- the fine print. What, really, is a contract? What are the similarities and differences among types of contracts? Typically, what rights to their work can authors expect to keep, to negotiate, and to relinquish when they sign a contract? How can writers tell when they are being taken advantage of, and what can they do about it?

Cynthia Blake Sanders is an intellectual property and media lawyer at the Baltimore law firm Ober Kaler. Her practice includes trademark, fair use, licensing, advertising, and technology transfer. She is a member of the board of the Maryland Lawyers for the Arts and edits the MLA Arts Brief, and she is a textile artist. She is frequent speaker and author on legal and contractual issues for authors and other creators.
